Bergere Jewelry was created in 1947 in New York by L. Erbert and Pohls Incorporated. The company created high end costume jewelry that is still popular today. The company stopped production of the merchandise created in 1979. During the period that they were in business, however, there were many pieces put out for sale to the public. Some of the shops that sold the items produced were retail stores that sold high end products to wealthy clients.
Bergere jewelry was made with quality craftsmanship which is one of the reasons it has retained its standing as fine jewelry among collectors. The company produced items such as necklaces, bracelets,
pins, clips and earrings in a variety of styles. These items were made using three different metals as the base for the design. The metals used in the creation of these pieces were rhodium which is a white
metal that looks much like silver, gold plated metals as well as a variety of brass mixed metals that were made to look like gold. Once the base was made for each product, the piece was then decorated
with faux pearls and other stones that were made to look like precious gems.
While the jewelry produced by this company did not contain any silver, gold or precious stones it was still considered high end by both customers and stores that sold the merchandise. This was because
each piece looked like it was straight from the runway of Paris or Milan. Once piece, for example, depicts a golden flower. This piece is constructed completely out of gold plated metal and molded into
the shape of a blossoming flower. There is a stem that shoots off to the side that contains three faux pearls that are made to look like a new blossom. This is a beautiful piece that still sells for forty five
dollars.
Some of the products made by the company are more intricate in design. While some are made simple to add a classic look to any ensemble. One such simple piece is a silver looking bracelet with links. This product is made of rhodium but appears to look as though it is molded from sterling silver. The piece is a series of egg shaped orbs that interlock to create the bracelet.
This bracelet sells for approximately thirty-five dollars. This price range for the merchandise created by Bergere jewelry is normally sold within the starting range of thirty dollars and fifty dollars. There are, however, pieces that sell for more than that.
The jewelry created by this company can be easily mistaken for common costume jewelry if not properly inspected. Each piece features a stamp with a makers mark either on the back or on the clasp. The mark created for the jewelry sold by this company will read “Bergere” either in script or “Bergere” with an accent on the second “e” in the name. These were the only two marks used on the merchandise produced by this company.
