Christian Dior Costume Jewelry is very popular with jewelry lovers. Without any formal training as a young man, Christian Dior became a household name in clothing, perfume and costume jewelry around the world.
The Dior line began in clothing with the New Look Collection. This would be his signature line for 25 years. The success of New Look allowed Dior to begin making opulent costume jewelry. His work caught the attention of numerous celebrities including Betty Davis, Jacqueline Kennedy and Lucille Ball (just to name a few). 
These women wore his lush, dazzling pieces as predominantly as they did fashion designer clothing.
To keep up with the demand for unique and beautiful pieces, Dior hired what would become some of the most time-honored names in jewelry artistry including Henry Schreiner and Yves Saint Laurent. It was during this period that the House of Dior premiered the aurora borealis rhinestone – a stunning piece of rock crystal specially treated to reflect a rainbow of color akin to an opal.
These rhinestones set in gold tones, along with floral motifs were two dominant characteristics in Christian Dior costume jewelry.
It’s no surprise that Christian Dior costume jewelry is highly treasured. It was made to be high quality, reflect femininity, and artistry. Nonetheless, there were a few bumps in the road. One criticism emerged in the 1940s with a new look for his line that included TONS of jewelry. No outfit was complete without accessories. Some felt that this was in poor taste due to the War, but even so that line became quite popular.
If you’re in the market for a piece of Vintage Christian Dior Jewelry be prepared – it’s one of the most valuable in the market today. Periodically you may find random pieces at a flea market where someone doesn’t know what they’ve got. The smaller and simpler the design, the less expensive the jewelry tends to be.
Having said that, this is a good investment for collectors of vintage jewelry. When you’re shopping make sure to look for the name “Christian Dior” in an oval. Nearly all pieces are signed and some are dated (those with dates are highly sought after). Other favored signatures include:
* Dior West Germany
* Dior for Kramer
* Made in Germany for Christian Dior (followed by a date)
* Germany for Dior (with a date)
* Chr Dior with copyright symbol
The West Germany pieces were made in the 1950s.
If someone claims you’re looking at a Dior, and it doesn’t have a signature – walk away. It’s very likely a knock off.
